Are you a government entity or a private entity?

FamiliesFirst is a private nonprofit organization. Although we receive funding from a variety of sources our primary customers are the various counties (approximately 37) we serve in Northern and Central California.

Who pays for your services or where does your funding come from?

We have a variety of funding streams that include county contract money, state funding, federal funding and private contributions. Some of our services, although very few, are paid for directly by the client or the client’s family.

How do these children get referred to you?

It really depends upon the program to which they are being referred. Children are referred to us through the county Department of Social Services, The Department of Education, Word of Mouth or through the Department of Mental Health.

What happens to their parents?

Some parents are very involved in their children’s care and have voluntarily placed their children with FamiliesFirst. Other parents may be deceased or their parental rights have been severed. It really just depends on that particular families situation. Our families in our wrap around program tend to be highly involved and the ultimate goal is for the child to remain in the biological home with his or her family.

What type of donations do you need?

We need donations of any kind. We gladly and willingly accept anything you can do to help the children and families we serve. Due to supply, we tend to have an excess of donations of children’s toys and items for small children. The most useful of any donation would be cash or check due to the flexibility this will provide. However, any donation is graciously accepted and is tax deductible.

What happens after the kids leave you?

It depends on each child’s psychological and developmental ability upon discharge from FamiliesFirst. Some children return home with their biological families or another family member, while others may go to another foster home or a group home. Our goal is that we can support the counties plan for permanency for each child referred to FamiliesFirst.
