The FamiliesFirst organization dates back to 1974 when The Praul Center Residential Treatment Program (RTP) was founded in Davis with two staff members serving three emotionally disturbed boys in a family home. In 1978 the Family Living Project, a foster care program, was started. It later became known as the Professional Foster Care Program or PFC.

In the 1980s the agency expanded to include three RTP homes in the community, a Nonpublic School in Davis serving residential program children, an Intensive Family Preservation Program (IFPP) in Solano County, and a six-bed house in Davis.

In 1985 the agency's name was changed to FamiliesFirst, reflecting the importance of family in children's lives.

FamiliesFirst continued to grow in the late 1980s, adding a second six-bed house in Davis and a second office, originally located in Contra Costa County, and later moved to Hercules. Over the next several years 3 new six-bed houses were opened in Davis and services were expanded to Stockon, San Jose, Sacramento and Fresno.

In the mid 1990s The Crisis Residential and Day Treatment Programs were started in Concord, a San Leandro office was opened, and the Sacramento Community Based Services (CBS) Program was started.

Adoptions, Kinship, Shared Family Care & Transitional Living Programs were started in 1997. Two years later offices in Modesto and Oakland were opened. In 2002 the Hercules programs were consolidated to Oakland, and Concord sites and a Fairfield office was opened.

Today the agency has more than 550 associates serving 10,000 children annually across Northern California. Families First offers a broad continuum of services including: Treatment Foster Care, Residential Treatment Programs/Crisis Nursery, School Programs, In-home Mental Health and Wrap-Around Services.
