YOLO CRISIS NURSERY
The Yolo Crisis Nursery is a six-bed facility that provides 24-hour care for children who range in age from birth to six. The purpose of the Nursery is to prevent abuse and/or neglect of children under the age of six years by providing shelter for the children and assistance to their families who are facing a crisis. Services are free of charge to parents who place their children in the nursery on a voluntary basis. Parents/guardians can place their children in the nursery during times of severe stress or medical emergency. Children can stay at the Nursery for as little as 24-hours and as long as 30 days at a time.
Parents, with assistance from the Crisis Nursery social worker, are required to develop a Case Plan, which focuses on both the child's immediate needs as well as the parent/guardian's needs. The case plan goal is to resolve the crisis that led the family to seek assistance from the Nursery. The case manager/social worker will conduct a family assessment which includes collecting information regarding the family's health, mental health, parenting skills, problems with attachment/bonding, family interactions, support systems, coping strategies, levels of stress, communication skills and previous utilization of assistance. The program relies on connecting parents/guardians with other community resources and works in collaboration with resources for parents/guardians that will out last their child's stay in their nursery. An evaluation of the child's adjustment and behavior during his/her stay at the Nursery is documented and discussed with the parents/guardians.
The nursery is part of a Regional Crisis Nursery Collaboration partially funded by the California Endowment and Proposition 10 funds as well as other private donations. On occasion, the Yolo Crisis Nursery may provide beds for young children who have been referred through Child Protective Services of Yolo County. When a child is referred via this channel the Yolo County Department of Employment and Social Services covers the costs of care and services.
